18 / 4 / 12 Wednesday: 12 noon Arrive Nice (Cote d'azur)
On arrival at Nice airport we will be met by our French Speaking 'Splashout Guide' Melodie Minty. The airport is only 6 km taxi ride from hotel.
NICE ACCOMODATION: The three star 'Mercure Grimaldi Hotel'. Just a short 300m stroll to The Mediterranean Sea and close to all facilities. When we arrive we can chill, rest, relax, acclimatise and recoup from travel for the rest of the day (possibly meander to the 'Med' and a nearby local cafe for a light evening meal). We can just simply 'hang out' !
More about Hotel Grimaldi HERE
19 / 4 / 12 Thursday: 10.00 am 'Musee Matisse' Gallery. See information HERE
NOTE: At 'Musee Matisse' we shall have a pre-booked private guided tour (English).
1.00 pm: Pick up by Private Coach from 'Musee Matisse'.
Lunch in a gorgeous harbourside cafe, maybe Villefranche, then tour along the extraordinary Mediterranean scenic coastal road via Monaco, Eze, Monte Carlo.
We will cruise the gorgeous Cote d'azur beachfronts and harbours. We will visit the beautiful medieval village of Eze overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Maybe a good place for another 'Cafe au lait' or a spot of lunch in a cliff top cafe. We can see the principality of Monaco home of the late Princess Grace (Grace Kelly) and the world famous Formula 1 'Monaco Grand Prix'.
We can drive / walk through 'Casino Square' in the heart of Monte Carlo - location of the beautiful Art Deco 'Monte Carlo Casino'.
Late afternoon: We will be dropped back at Hotel Grimaldi, where we can relax. Some may just want to 'chill' and have an early night or some may prefer to get out there and 'play up' French style !!! Once there, we will make our choices. Cafes everywhere, so we can easily 'promenade' and enjoy the evening in any way we wish.
NOTE: Cote d'Azur. Many artists came from and painted in Paris, however, they frequently travelled south, by train, to the Cote d'azur (blue sea). They painted 'en plein air' and sought out the amazing light of the area.
This locale is one big testimony to their creativity. Matisse (Henri Matisse lived in Nice) Renoir. Chagall. Picasso. Dufy. Leger. Braque, even Claude Monet for a while !
'Blue Nude' Henri Matisse 'Nude woman with necklace' Pablo Picasso
20 / 4 / 12 Friday:
We make the pilgrimage to and stay the whole day in beautiful 'St Paul de Vence' just up the hill from Nice. This is where 'The French Impressionists' hung out ! They often stayed overnight and paid for their food and lodgings by leaving their day's artwork at the local inns.
Information on 'St Paul de Vence' HERE
This same artwork has been gathered together and is now one of the most famous private collections in the world. The main collection lives in a gorgeous little inn named 'La Colombe D'or' and is only viewed by residents of the hotel. In more recent times significant artists and art lovers from around the world have gravitated to 'La Colombe D'or' - now an exclusive Hotel / Restaurant (Picasso's favourite).
Lunch: Will be at 'Cafe de la Place' opposite La Colombe d'Or.
See cafe information HERE
Both establishments are right in the town square, where the locals play 'petanque' (the French national sport). We have pre-booked our 13 person 'al fresco' table at 'Cafe de la Place'.
This popular cafe is central, is casual and has reasonable prices.

STOP PRESS . . . La Colombe D'or
Later this Friday afternoon we have negotiated a private viewing of the exclusive 'Colombe D'or' Art Collection. This is quite a coup as this is a Private Hotel and not a public gallery.
The hotel is not in the practise of showing groups through. This has been arranged on the grounds that we are an Australian art school - a group of artists - coming a long way for French culture and the love of art. The owner, Monsieur Francis Roux, also has a great love of art and travel, he therefore agreed readily. He is quite delighted to invite us through.
We shall be shown the works as two seperate groups (4.00 pm & 4.30 pm).
We will be greeted and escorted by the owner's English speaking personal assistant 'Nathalie' who visited OZ three years ago and can't wait to meet us. Nathalie has been extremly helpful with all the local arrangements.
We are privileged to have this uncommon opportunity. There is nothing in it for 'Colombe d'or'. There is no charge. It is simply happening out of sheer generosity, international good will and because it was requested.
Merci Colombe D'or'.

St Paul de Vence: We shall walk to explore this little medeival hillside town. It is full of galleries and arty things of great interest. While in St Paul de Vence 'Le Chapelle Du Rosaire' is one of our destinations. The Chapel interior was designed and created by Henri Matisse, out of grattitude to the sisters of the convent who looked after him in his ailing last years. It was his final and he said his most personally significant work.

There is so much for us to enjoy, learn about and experience here. We could spend the whole trip in this area and not be disappointed. Jenny and Krysia travelled extensively through this region on their 2002 Grand Tour d'art. Jenny knows the region very well and our guide 'Melodie Minty' is also familiar with the area.

Comment from Krysh: 'This whole area is a feast for the senses. It was the time spent on Cote d'azur 2002 that inspired the creation of Splashout Studios ten years ago. To be so close and not visit, would be a sin. Mel, who speaks fluent french, will also make sure we are looked after well everywhere we go'.
Our 'Splashout Guide' is Melodie Minty. Mel is a retired teacher who lives in France + Abu Dhabi with her husband Ross. Mel loves Art, knows France and is more than happy to help research, organise, and welcome us. Mel's answer to the request was 'I'll be up for that, it sounds like fun' ! For these four days, Mel will be part of the 'Splashout Team' as our French speaking guide.
21 / 4 / 12 Saturday: 8.00 am Private coach pick up from hotel. We travel the 3 hour route from Nice to Manosque. We will leave after breakfast and proceed along the scenic coastal road via gorgeous little harbours and ports. We shall slip into Cannes, home of the famous 'Cannes Film Festival'. Another mid morning break, 'cafe au lait' and some brief exploration.
1.00 pm Arrive Manosque: Meet at the station: We will be met by Yves and Monica of ICSCIS to commence 'Atelier Provence' the 7 day Art workshop.

We will also explore Monte Martre (The Artist's Quarter). The art history here is amazing.
Sacre Coeur Cathedral. We have requested that at dusk, we sit on the steps of Sacre Coeur Cathedral and watch the beautiful lights of Paris turn on in the twilight, before our very eyes. (This is a 'must do' activity when in Paris).
